Mies on the "Building Art"
“Beauty is the radiance of truth”, the medieval philosopher Agustin cites in his work City of God; Mies finds in this the core of his approach to architecture. Almost in each one of his lectures, Mies explains why there is a need to find truth in reality- an objective one. For Mies, the question as to “the nature of the building art”, let him submerge himself in the Aquinas’ explanation of truth: “Verita est adequation rei et intellectus”(Summa I. 16.1)- Truth is the conformity of the intellect to the things. From this answer “came the search for spiritual orientation of architectural truth, without which there could be no clarity in the relationship between essence and appearance, necessity and possibility, construction and form.(”Fritz Neumeyer, The Artless Word, Mies Van de Rohe on the Building Art, p. xxi)
